What is a CPAP Machine?
The most common form of sleep apnea is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea. This is when the airway becomes blocked / collapsed and prevents the proper amount of air from reaching the lungs. Some air that squeezes through the blockage creates the sound you hear known as snoring. With the use of continuous positive airway pressure or better known as the acronym CPAP, your airway will become unobstructed, allowing the proper air to pass to your lungs eliminating most, if not all snoring. You will also feel less fatigued and full of energy.
What is a Bi-Level Machine?
A Bi-Level Machine is typically used for patients diagnosed with a more serious form of sleep apnea known as Central Sleep Apnea. This is where there is a failed communication between the brain and the muscles which cause you to breathe. A Bi-Level Machine will automatically pump short bursts of air which helps kick start a person’s breathing. Some people who find it difficult to exhale against the continuous airflow of a CPAP Machine are often put on a Bi-Level Machine. This machine allows two pressure settings making it easier to exhale.
What is an ASV Machine?
An ASV Machine is also known as an Adaptive Servo Ventilation Machine. This machine type is mostly prescribed to patients that have been diagnosed with a combination of Central Sleep Apnea, Mixed Sleep Apnea, and also Cheynes-Stokes respiration disorder. The ASV Machine uses an algorithm which automatically detects major reductions and pauses in breathing. In other machines the main focus is the set pressure whereas, an ASV Machine’s focus is the amount of air a person is actually receiving.
*Untreated Sleep Apnea can increase risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, and diabetes.
